![]() Whatever he was up to, I reckon he’d still be doing the right thing. Maybe he’d be the coach of his church softball team. If Todd Beamer had survived, where would he be today? Maybe he’d have a desk job by now – no more red-eye flights to San Francisco. Good and evil are unfashionable terms in modern news reporting, but it’s hard to conceive of a darker deed than mass murder, and it’s hard to conceive of a greater deed than trying to prevent mass murder taking place. ‘Let’s roll,’ became a clarion call, a cri de coeur, a declaration that America was undefeated, that its values endured. However, in this instance, there’s more to it than that. Why is Todd’s story so important? And why should we remember it today? Well, for the same reason we remember any heroic deed, to ensure that those who gave their lives to save others aren’t forgotten. After Todd’s death his good friend Doug Macmillan gave up his job to run the Todd Beamer Foundation, which supports children whose parents perished on Flight UA93. Todd could have flown straight on to San Francisco, but he wanted to spend the evening with his young family. ![]() The day before 9/11, Todd and his wife Lisa had just returned from a trip to Italy, awarded to him by his company to reward his prowess as a salesman. Todd played for his church softball team. A talented sportsman, his hopes of playing professional baseball were curtailed by a car accident. He attended Wheaton Academy, a Christian high school, and Wheaton College, a liberal arts college. He was raised to respect hard work and the Bible. He had an elder sister and a younger sister. Todd Beamer was born in Flint, Michigan, in 1968. Four months later, on 9 January 2002, Todd’s widow, Lisa Brosious, gave birth to a healthy baby girl. It crashed in an empty field in Pennsylvania. Thanks to them, Flight UA93 never reached Washington, and its intended target: either the White House or the US Capitol (though Vice President Dick Cheney had given orders that the plane should be shot down). Todd and his fellow passengers must have known their chances of success were miniscule, but they preferred doing something to doing nothing. The last thing she heard him say was, ‘Are you ready? OK, let’s roll.’ ‘If I don’t make it, please call my family and let them know how much I love them,’ he told Lisa. Todd and a group of fellow passengers (and several flight attendants) held a council of war, and took a vote, and resolved to storm the cockpit (even faced with almost certain death, American democracy prevailed). ![]() Todd remained remarkably calm, though his voice rose a little when the plane went into a dive. They recited Psalm 23 (‘Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil’). Todd and Lisa recited the Lord’s Prayer together. Their 13-minute conversation is a precious record of an extraordinary act of heroism, a testament to the bravery and humanity that survived that awful day.Įven faced with almost certain death, American democracy prevailed The supervisor’s name was Lisa Jefferson (Todd was struck by the strange coincidence that she shared his wife’s name). Todd Beamer tried to make a credit card call and ended up talking to a call center supervisor for the firm who handled United Airlines’ in-flight phone service. It quickly became clear to Todd, and everyone else onboard, that theirs was the fourth plane. Some passengers managed to make phone calls to friends and family, and news soon spread around the cabin that two planes had crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York – and that a third plane had crashed into the Pentagon. This was just another working day.įorty-six minutes after take-off, terrorists stormed the cockpit, seized the controls, and announced, ‘We have a bomb onboard.’ The plane changed course for Washington DC. Todd worked for a computer company, selling software. He was due to fly back that night, to rejoin his pregnant wife, Lisa, and their two young sons, Drew and David. Twenty years ago today, on the morning of 11 September 2001, 32-year-old Todd Beamer boarded a United Airlines flight at Newark, New Jersey, bound for a business meeting in San Francisco. ![]() ![]() Other notable ephemeral rivers include the Todd River and Sandover River in Central Australia as well as the Son River, Batha River and the Trabancos River. Price-wise, I don’t see much advantage to the Extreme III compared to the Mach 3. I did tend to cut myself a bit more with the Extreme III though. At first it looked like it might be a little flimsy, but I didn’t have any problems using it at all.Īs I said earlier, the shave was comfortable, and skin irritation levels were almost as low as the Mach 3. It’s the most substantial handle of any disposable razor I’ve used, but it’s definitely lightweight when compared to the Mach 3 handle. They also tended to gunk up a bit more than the Mach 3 blades, but they aren’t hard to clean out. They didn’t seem as durable as the Mach 3 blades to me, but for a disposable razor they’re fine. The blades on the Extreme III are pretty good, and I felt the shave I got was close and comfortable. It’s primary competition in the shaving market is the Gillette Mach 3, so most of my comparisons will be between those two blades. The commercials I’ve seen show tennis player Andre Agassi shaving his face and head, which is nice. I will probably be reviewing the Gillette Sensor 2 and Schick ST2 next. The Schick Extreme III has been marketed based on two primary qualities: it’s a three blade razor, and it’s conveniently disposable. I will eventually do another few shaves with each one individually and see if my opinion of each one changes. Though I do give it props because it is doing exactly what it is meant to be doing. The hydrating gel in the Hydro 3 for me, like I said earlier, was just WAY to much in my opinion. I chose it because I personally liked the way that the head moved compared to the Hydro 3, and it did not leave a lot if any hydrating gel on my face. So overall they both did pretty well, but personally I would have to give it to the Mach 3. I had some trouble with this one, as I felt that I needed to push down somewhat to get the head to begin to pivot and move around some of the curves of my face, while the Mach 3 I did not have to push or do anything at all to get the head to pivot. The Hydro 3 has where pivoting action moves along a circular track. The head pivoted very easily as I was moving it along my face. Head Movement: The pivot point on the Mach 3 is down near the bottom of the cartridge. But that is what I felt after doing a pass with each razor. Though personally, as long as the soap/cream is doing its job I don't think that it should matter. While the Mach 3 you could not feel much if any hydration. It was enough to where you could take your fingers and feel/see gel come off your face in a small string. Personally, I though that the Hydro 3 had a little too much of the hydrating gel. Hydration: By far without a doubt the Hydro 3 had much more than the Mach 3. But to me they were so close that there is the possibility that they were pretty much the same. Afterwards though, subsequent passes were really smooth with the Hydro I believe being smoother since it has more hydration gel in the hydrating pad.Ĭloseness: At the end of the first pass I felt like maybe the Mach 3 had gotten just ever so slightly closer than the Hydro 3. Smoothness: When they both first touch my skin and cut for the first time, there was barely a slight tug from the Mach 3 and a tug that was mostly the same but slightly more noticeable from the Hydro 3. For my shaving cream I used Old Spice Original with the Omega 10066 Boar Hair brush. So here is how each razor stacks up to one another: I shaved one half of my face with each razor. I just finished doing a shave with the Mach 3 and Hydro 3, so they will be first up. Then Finally for 2 blades I bought the Gillette Sensor 2 and the Schick ST2 disposable razors. I bought the Schick Xtreme 3 disposable razor that I will either pair up with the Gillette Sensor 3 or Sensor 3 simple (which style would you guys recommend?). ![]() So I went to my local stores and bought the basic Gillette Mach 3 and Schick Hydro 3 replaceable cartridge razors. I love shaving with my DE razors and never plan on switching back to using cartridge exclusively.
